Rauschenberg tenne la sua prima mostra personale alla Betty Parsons Gallery nella primavera del 1951.  Nel 1953, mentre era in Italia, fu notato da Irene Brin e Gaspero del Corso e organizzarono la sua prima mostra europea nella loro famosa galleria di Roma .
Nel 1953, Eleanor Ward invitò Rauschenberg a partecipare a una mostra congiunta con Cy Twombly alla Stable Gallery . Nella sua seconda mostra personale a New York alla Charles Egan Gallery nel 1954, Rauschenberg presentò i suoi Red Paintings (1953-1953) e Combines (1954-1964). Leo Castelli allestì una mostra personale dei Combines di Rauschenberg nel 1958. L'unica vendita fu un'acquisizione da parte dello stesso Castelli di Bed (1955), ora nella collezione del Museum of Modern Art, New York . 

La prima retrospettiva della carriera di Rauschenberg fu organizzata dal Jewish Museum di New York nel 1963. Nel 1964 divenne uno dei primi artisti americani a vincere l'International Grand Prize in Painting alla Biennale di Venezia (James Whistler e Mark Tobey avevano precedentemente vinto premi per la pittura rispettivamente nel 1895 e nel 1958). Una retrospettiva di metà carriera fu organizzata dalla National Collection of Fine Arts (ora Smithsonian American Art Museum ), Washington, DC, e viaggiò attraverso gli Stati Uniti tra il 1976 e il 1978.

Negli anni Novanta una retrospettiva fu tenuta al Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum di New York (1997), che viaggiò nei musei di Houston, Colonia e Bilbao fino al 1999. Una mostra di Combines fu presentata al Metropolitan Museum of Art di New York (2005; viaggiò al Museum of Contemporary Art di Los Angeles , al Centre Georges Pompidou di Parigi e al Moderna Museet di Stoccolma fino al 2007). La prima retrospettiva postuma di Rauschenberg fu allestita alla Tate Modern (2016; viaggiò al Museum of Modern Art di New York e al San Francisco Museum of Modern Art fino al 2017).
