DOCTOR-DOC-DR.-„HIGH NOON“ IS BACK! (WONDERLAND DE LARGE)
Solo exhibition by Jonathan Meese at the Templon Gallery in Paris.
Four years after his last appearance in Paris with the exhibition that paid homage to Karl Lagerfeld, Jonathan Meese returns to the Templon gallery with DOCTOR-DOC-DR.- "HIGH NOON" IS BACK! (WONDERLAND DE LARGE) , an extravagant exhibition that highlights the power of tales and legends.
This new series of works unfolds around a litany of heroes, from Alice in Wonderland to the Wizard of Oz, Little Red Riding Hood, the Smurfs, and the Loch Ness Monster, who become protagonists and standard-bearers of a new vision of art.
The paintings teem with matter, in typical Meese style, sometimes dripping from the canvas, sometimes crushed to the point without return, merging childhood visions with calls for revolution.
Tales, myths, and legends are the glue that binds collective culture. And for Jonathan Meese, they are the crucible in which the Western imagination is forged, as well as a vital source of inspiration for his practice: “Without fairy tales, we would not be able to build the future ,” he says. “The whole world is a fairy tale; the future is somehow our wonderful world. We have a role to play in this omnipotent future. And art determines the future. Art is omnipotent.”
Over the past twenty years or so, Meese has developed an uncategorizable body of
work, somewhere between expressionism and actionism, combining painting, sculpture, installation, and performance. His work questions the boundaries between
culture and nature, creativity and conformity, appearance and power, proposing a
singular philosophy in which only art can serve as a guide for the evolving world.
The exhibition, inaugurated on September 2nd, will remain open to the public until October 28th 2023 at the Templon gallery at 30 Rue Beaubourg in Paris.
